Alshaab Alsori Aref Tarekh

A fine art student from Damascus University and a young calligrapher from the countryside outside of Hama were making posters for the Arab Spring in Tunisia and Egypt when demonstrations began in their home country of Syria. Brainstorming over the internet, they were soon joined by other Syrian artists and activists from around the world, including a philosopher and businessman.

Now the anonymous fifteen member-strong poster collective Alshaab Alsori Aref Tarekh (‘The Syrian People Know Their Way’) combine the country’s iconography – including Kurdish heroes – with traditional motifs, poems, idioms and protest chants in print-on-demand posters distributed through Facebook and Flickr.
